that i know of, we haven't discovered how Wakaba died so this short fic is an idea i had.

title: Speculation End
Rateing: pg13ish
warnings: angst, suicide, language
Sumary: Hisoka and Wakaba are sent on a case together to the place where she died years before and in a freak accident Hisoka learns how and why she died.

Speculation End

Wakaba stood on the bridge, staring into the water with a sadness in her eyes rivaled only by that of Tsuzuki.

Hisoka watched her silently, wondering why she'd brought him here.

There was nothing extraoridnary about this particular bridge.

in fact it was rather busy.

He sighed deeply.

She was very depressed it seemed.

Finally Hisoka touched her shoulder gently.

"Wakaba. We've been standing here for over an hour. I really hate to break you of your day dream but we have work to do."

Her shoulders sagged and she hung her head.

"Just a little while longer. I almost remember."

Hisoka turned her to him.

"When we're done with the case we'll sit out here for two days if you want. But there's a murderer on the loose."

Wakaba nodded with a heavy hearted sigh.

"Okay."

They began to walk towards the hotel they'd be staying in.

"A thousand stars have died here..."

She whispered to herself.

Hisoka stopped.

"What?"

She looked up into his eyes.

"A thousand stars have died here, amidst the wilting flowers along the drying riverbed. You will bring a new life to this desert town of rotting corpses so long since dead. You are the never ending friut tree to which I one day long to be wed."

Tears welled in her eyes and before Hisoka could stop her she ran straight at a passing car.

The empath paniced and dove ontop of her, trying to push her out of the way but before he had time to, the car hit them both.

Their bodies were flung off the bridge and into the riverbed below.

The last thing he saw was the car speeding away.
~~

When Hisoka woke several hours later he was alone, laying on the side of the bridge.

As he looked around he saw Wakaba standing on the bridge with another girl in the same school uniform.

She was laughing and the smile on her face was the biggest he'd ever seen.

"Wakaba!"

He didn't want to use his ability of flight as he was in front of this new girl.

"Hey can you help me? i got hit by a car."

But she didn't even look in his direction.

He stood slowly, frowning as he looked around.

Everything had changed.

The cars were from the mid fifties and some of the buildings were gone that had been there before.

Suddenly he realized he must be inside Wakaba's memories.

He floated up before her and waved his hand right in front of her face.

neither girl reacted and he decided to listen to their conversation as the two seemed to be a little more than friends.

"Is it a date than?"

Wakaba asked with a giggle and a twinkle in her eyes.

The older girl nodded with a warm smile.

"It's a date. I'll meet you here at six tomorrow evening."

She then kissed Wakaba softly.

Hisoka watched in surprise.

Wakaba had never seemed the type to like girls.

She was so obviously in love with Terazuma.

The older girl walked away and Wakaba watched her until she disappeared.

The smile never left her lips as she twirled.

"She loves me!"

She turned on her heel and began to run.

Hisoka followed close behind.

She slowed when she got to a house though and her smile suddenly turned angry.

She went into the house, slamming the door behind her.

"Never home. go a head, get drunk again. i'm fine. i can fend for myself you looser!"

She went into her room and closed that door a little more carefully.

Hisoka hovered there in the hall, wondering if he should enter or not.

Finally he slowly entered.

it was odd being in a continus ghost form but he found it convientent as well.

She lay on her bed, crying into her pillow.

A picture of an apparently happy family sat beside her.

There were three in the picture.

A mother with a kind and warm smile, a father with a protective and loving gleam to his eyes, and a very small daughter who had the biggest smile of them all.

happyness radiated from this small child and he gathered this must be her family.

on the bed beside the picture, her journal lay open to the latest entry.

He felt bad for reading it but he desperately wanted to know what had happened.

the writing was scribbled as if she'd been in tears when she wrote it.

He learned quickly that she had probably been in tears every day for a very long time.

He frowned at this idea and read the entry.

June 5th 1953
Mother died today. On my 14th birthday. At least she got to have a piece of my cake. but i don't understand why it had to be today. I'm so upset. And I have to be alone with her husband now. I hate him! He hits us! When daddy died I thought I'd die too. I wish i had! i wish i was dead so i don't have to deal with this! he drinks so much and then he gets angry about nothing! now i'm alone with him! i can't stay here much longer! He's going to hurt me, i know it!

Both looked toward the door as the house suddenly shook.

The front door was slammed open and then closed.

A raging drunk voice boomed and Wakaba sprang up, closing the journal quickly and tossed it and the picture under her bed.

"Bitch! Get in here!"

She didn't want to but she knew it would be worse if she didn't.

She put on a scowel even though she was scared to death.

Hisoka followed her, getting a bad feeling.

"You called daddy?"

She said this sarcastically and it earned her a hard slap across the face.

Hisoka grew angry and lunged at him.

"Don't you dare...!"

Only to be reminded that he wasn't really there as he went through the man.

"oh no...Wakaba...i want to help you."

He felt terrible as he watched.

She shook it off.

"I cooked before school. it just has to be heated up."

He smacked her again.

"a wife always cooks before her husband gets home so it's already hot!"

She took a deep breath.

"I'm not your wife daddy."

He growled and rased his hand to strike her again but someone rushed in and caught the hand.

"Do it again and i'll kill you."

It was the girl from the bridge.

Hisoka stared in shock as Wakaba crumbled to the floor like a rag doll.

He watched in horror as a fight ensued between the older girl and Wakaba's step father.

He grabbed a knife from the drawer and stabbed her repeatedly until she fell, nearly dead.

Hisoka bristled as he turned his attentions to Wakaba who was just waking on the floor.

She screamed as she opened her eyes to see him coming at her, undoing his pants as he tossed the knife aside.

"You're fifteen Wakaba. You're old enough to be a wife now and i'll marry you..."

She couldn't move fast enough and Hisoka felt sick as he ran out.

He'd not watch this.

He ran as far from there as he could, falling to his knees on the bridge in sobs.

"Wakaba!"

He couldn't believe this had happened to her.

what seemed like an eternity later his eyes widened as Wakaba came running up the street, blood soaked uniform clinging to her.

her journal in her hands.

He watched over her as she wrote.

   June 5th 1954
I can't live anymore. i was raped today by my step father. i hate him! He killed the only person on this earth who ever loved me! i leave this for whoever finds my body. he's taken my innocence and my life. i'll be dead in just a few moments and i hope that whoever finds this will make him pay!

She set a heavy rock on top of the open page.

She'd written this in her own blood.

Hisoka reached for her, wishing he could touch her but he couldn't.

She crossed the railing, whispering one last time what the girl had said to her on the bridge before asking her on a date.

"A thousand stars have died here, amidst the wilting flowers along the drying riverbed. You will bring a new life to this desert town of rotting corpses so long since dead. You are the never ending friut tree to which I one day long to be wed."

With this final word she spread her arms and let herself fall.

"NO!"

Hisoka cried out as he watched her hit the water.

moments later the girl came stumbling up the street towards him and Hisoka's heart broke.

"You're alive?! oh no! no, Wakaba wake up! please! She's alive! he didn't kill her! oh gods Wakaba please!"

He was nearly choking on his own sobs.

The girl however was not alive for much longer.

when she saw her beloved floating in the drying river bed she too fell.

Hisoka screamed, feeling frustraighted and sad.

He watched as Wakaba's soul parted from her body and the cry she let out stabbed into his heart.

"Wakaba!"

Finally she looked up at him.

"Hisoka!"

Tears streamed down her cheeks and she flew up to him.

"Wakaba...I'm so sorry. i tried to help you but i couldn't even touch you!"

He held her closely, feeling a new bond beginnning to form between them.

"Hisoka...it's time to wake up. I remember everything now."

Hisoka nodded.

"Please get me out of here. i can't take this. i'm so sorry!"

She took a deep breath and they closed their eyes.

~~

"I knew it was you daddy."

Wakaba stood beside Terazuma later that evening.

"That's not possible! you killed yourself!"

She nodded.

"The souls of the dead do not rest sometimes. like yourself. I'm a shinigami now. and i've come to take you to your trial."

He went down on his knees before her.

"no! please! i'll go to hell! please don't send me to hell!"

She frowned and looked up at Terazuma.

"How much trouble would we get into if we didn't bring him back?"

Terazuma stared at her in shock.

"You can't be thinking about letting him go completely free!"

She shook her head.

"oh no. i just have a better punishment in mind."

The mans eyes widened as Terazuma grabbed his shirt and pulled him up by the neck.

"What better punishment is there for a wife beater and a child rapist?"

Wakaba smiled sardonically.

"An eturnity trapt in a room all alone with his memories...in hell he's punished physically...but that's not good enough. he thrives on pain. please Tera..."

Tera stared into her eyes and sighed.

"I'll...take the wrap. just do what you have to."

She smiled brightly and Terazuma followed her into what was once her room.

She picked up her journal and began to rip out the pages.

~~

Hisoka woked with a pained and startled cry.

He sat up, looking around and suddenly Tsuzuki was at his side.

"Hisoka! thank the gods! are you okay?!"

He began to sob all over again as he clung to Tsuzuki.

"Where's Wakaba?!"

Tsuzuki patted his hair softly.

"She finished the case with Terazuma. She'll be fine. it's you we've been worried about. you've been out for more than a week."

No sooner had he finished speaking than Wakaba walked in.

"Hisoka...are you okay? i'm so sorry."

He pulled away from Tsuzuki and leapt from the bed, holding her tightly.

"You're okay right? you won't leave will you? i know what happened Wakaba. oh gods, it was so terrible!"

He sobbed into her shoulder and she sighed deeply.

"That's why i wanted to stay there. So i could remember the reason i'm here. I was thinking of moving on but i reconnected with why i'm a shinigami so no, i'm not going to leave anymore. i'm happy here. happy like i was before i lost my family. You're like the older brother i never had and i don't want to leave you. thank you for trying to help me."

He looked into her eyes.

"i feel a lot closer to you now, knowing what you went through. i'm just so sorry. you're such a wonderful person."

She smiled brightly at this.

"you are too. really...i'm fine again. it was so very long ago...and i did something i'd been meaning to for a very long time while i was there."

He blinked, brushing away his tears.

"What was it?"

She shook her head with a giggle.

"That's my little secret. maybe i'll tell you when i'm ready to move on. let's get out of here. Hey Tsuzuki, you wanna get some breakfast? I'll make pancakes just for you."

Tsuzuki's eyes gittered in delight.

"okay!"

Hisoka hugged her once more before detatching himself and smiled.

"That sounds good to me too. you're an excilent cook."

Her smile brightened.

"Mother taught me everything i know."

~~

In a small abandon house in the home town of a very lonely girl, sits a man all alone in a room he'll never be able to leave.

the walls are plastered with the girls journal and all he can do is read the pages and face his punishment for the rest of eturnity.

June 5th 2008
Happy anniversery mother and step father. i'm free today. i'm in love with a wonderful man who treats me like a princess. i have eternal beauty and youth and one very special friend. when you read this i want you to know that i'm the perfect wife and that dispite the hell you put me through...i don't hate you anymore because i'm happy knowing that you will never hurt anyone the way you hurt me. i hope your stay isn't too harsh. i've saved you at least from hell, even though truly that's where you belong. i think i can thank you now. because if you hadn't raped me, i'd never have killed myself and i'd have died miserable and alone like you did. but i'm loved here, and that's all that matters.

As Wakaba cooked over her stove, she smiled a little.

revenge was worth every bit of pain she'd suffered and she knew her last words hit him the hardest.

'You tried to beat me down like you did my mother. but in the end i have the last laugh and i've beaten you down instead like the snake that you are.'

That's so sad.  It is rare to find fics on Wakaba's past and this is definitely an interesting take on it.

^^ thanks. Wakaba, like Tsuzki, seems extremely happy. though we don't know a lot about her past or why she died at such a young age.i figured her death had to be tradgic and then she had to have an attachment to the human world, and what better attachment than one of being in love?
