The forest was full of life as he walked, his well wrapped feet making no noise at all as he moved. The moon was high in the sky and the night creatures were calling out to potential mates loudly. They had no care for him. He came and went and left no trace, unlike those who lived outside the forest. Those outside the forest wanted to take it over, cutting down the trees and dwelling where they didn’t belong, letting those who lived within those trees die or go homeless. He began to run, his almost platinum eyes blazing through the night like a creature nocturnal. He didn’t need to see to be able to get to where he was going, but the light of the moon shone down over him and his surroundings, making him within his black wrappings look like a shadowy ghost.
Soon he found himself closing on the city, the noise from the animals calming as the scent of humans reached him. A small growl emanated from his throat, but he cut it off, pausing by the last tree of the forest, the closest he’d be to the city whilst still having the comforting cover he cared for so dearly. There were guards walking the perimeter of the grounds. He smirked. Apparently his prior visits had told them that there was someone… or something out there that was causing them problems with spreading themselves further across the land that was once fertile soil. He was the balm that would bring back the trees and rid them of this new and powerful man who thought that the trees and animals were worthless. He would defeat him! He lunged from behind the tree, knocking out the two intersecting guards as they walked in opposite directions, both falling at the same time. He grabbed them before they could hit the ground and carried them to hide them in a small shack that housed the tools of a gardener. Afterward, he made his way further into the city.
House after house went by until he was reaching the innards of the city, the wealthier houses built here. The people who owned these houses would have servants… slaves even. He fought himself for a moment at the thought of one human owning another, pausing beneath an awning to catch his breath.
~~
One such house where the lanterns glowed gently, a high wealthy Englishman sat sipping on his rice wine in a bath. Beside him sat a young Japanese man who held his clothes. He was the Englishman's slave and he owed many things to the man, including his life. "Koikobe..." The man in the bath addressed the slave. "Yes master Richards?" His English was very good, unlike his masters Japanese. "Go to the front door and see if my wife is anywhere near the house." Koikobe stood and bowed low before going to the door. He looked around but saw no one. Master wasn't going to like this. Before he went back in however, he gazed up at the moon with a heavy sigh. Some nights he really wished his family hadn't sold him to that brothel...
~~
From nowhere, a hand was pressed around the young man's mouth tightly and he was pulled backward against a heavily muscled chest. The voice spoke in Japanese, though the accent was all too neutral to tell where from. "Silent. Or your tongue will grow new grass tomorrow." The flat of a dagger was pressed to his cheek just beneath his eye.
~~
The small form froze, eyes widening. He gasped as he felt the cold steel but he made no more sound at the man’s command. He wasn't sure what was happening. Was this the brothel owner come back for him? He'd run away from the place, but he could always claim his master had kidnapped him... which wasn't a far cry from the truth. To satisfy himself he asked all the questions he wanted to know, in his head. The only movement of his body was slightly heavier breathing in his fear.
~~
"Answer quick and you will live this night through," came the voice, not at all breathless for all of his heavy dragging, "the house you just came out of, is that the house of the white man from over the big waters who is here to rebuild? Is he the one who owns all?" There was a slight hiss to his words, showing his hatred for the man more than any explanation ever could.
~~
He shook his head. "No! Masters wife if Nihongo, and the grandfather is very ill and dyeing." He hoped that would be a sufficient answer. "Please don't kill me! I will give you pleasures if you let me go!"
~~
The man paused at this. “Nani…?” he stuttered, “ch-chotto maten… y-you’re one of the slaves to them? You… BELONG to one of them?” He hesitated slightly, arms shaking with an effort to calm himself. “C-come with me; I will show you freedom and worlds that you will never have had the chance to see before. I will make it so that nobody can ever hurt you again…”
~~
He bit his lip as he pulled out of the mans grasp and turned to face him. "Who are you?" He took another step away. "I have never known freedom. I was sold to the sex market when I was nine and just rescently master saved me from there. If I come with you how will I know that you won't enslave me yourself, or sell me off the way my aunt did when my parents died?" He was terribly scared at the moment but he didn't dare try to run into the house. "I...trust master."
~~
Grabbing the other's wrist he stared his prisoner down with glowing eyes. "I have been where you are," he said, “I know that once everything’s said and done, he’ll drop you like you don’t matter. If it comes to your life or his, he’ll want you to die. If it comes to your life or his dog’s, he’ll kill you. Come with me… There are others who will tell you the same. Onegaishimasu…”
~~
"No!" He cried as he tried to pull away again, only succeeding in hurting his wrist. "I'll die for Master if I must! And he doesn't have pets!" He looked towards the door. "Master!" He pulled against the other man until he was bent almost his half, digging his sandals into the ground. "You lie! You’re from the brothel aren't you?! That's all you want! To take me back there! Let go of me!" The master however did not hear a sound as he slipped into his bed on the other side of the house, over the soft tinkling sound of the water garden.
~~
With a quick motion, the other drew him close again. “Sumimasen,” he murmured before pressing a hand over the other’s mouth with a damp rag emanating a strong scent. “Tomorrow you will know nothing.”
~~
The smaller form struggled for only a moment before everything went black, his body falling limply against the stronger man.

It took only about an hour for the guards to find the boy, the other figure long gone. They brought him back to his master as a young woman fetched salts to wake him. Soon the spices were waved beneath his nose.
~~
He woke with a jolt, springing up for a few seconds before falling back dizzily. "Where am I?" He couldn't seem to fit the place in his mind momentarily and that was panicking him. He shivered. "You're not with him are you?" He moaned softly as he tried to shake off the feeling of dizziness.
~~
Several of the guards grimaced at him. The head of the guard slapped him. “Silence, slave!” he ordered, “you have no right to be talking in our presence! We’ve brought you back to your master after you tried to run away so hopefully HE will deal a truly damaging blow in our wake.” They stared down upon him disgustedly.

Koikobe stared up at him for a moment, trembling. He hadn’t realized he was with anyone but the woman. He was only slightly relieved to finally recognize the house, but he was quite unnerved by the dream he’d had. And now he was afraid. Would his master believe that he was trying to escape? He knew master didn’t believe in the cane, but he didn’t know what would happen at all. He’d never crossed the man before, but what he’d done to the man in the brothel only a few months ago was enough to keep him inline.
The man walked in, an angry look on his face as he stared coldly down at his slave. “Everyone else please leave.” His voice was quiet as he spoke. “I do not punish my slaves before the eyes of others.” Koikobe cringed at the look on his masters face and the cane in his hand. He knew the master wouldn’t use it on him, but it had been used before and he remembered clearly the way it felt against his skin. He still had the scars to remind him of the consequences of being bad. He dared not speak in front of the others. _________________
The guards sniffed slightly and left, the door closing behind them. Soon their footsteps faded away to nothing outside and the room was completely silent.
The master nodded but his words were harsh. "I cannot believe you. I saved your life from misery and torture and you think you can escape from me?" He cracked the cane down onto the bed beside the smaller form and he let out cry. "please master! i'm sorry! i didn't! i don't know what happened!"
There was another crack and koikobe began to tremble. "you will sleep in here tonight slave! i sent you on a simple task and you defy me!"
there was another succesion of cracks and cries until all fell silent and Koikobe fell gasping to the bed in case the guards were to see him. the master cut his wrist slightly and smeared it over the cane to make it appear as though the beating was sevear. _________________
Within moments, the master's wife was in the room, arms crossed across her chest. "What are you doing now?" she demanded before spotting the blood. "This again?" She pulled a wrap of bandaging from her sleeve and made her way forward.
The master turned to her and growled. "He was injured coming to look for you. Where were you?" He looked down at Koikobe. "I sent him t see where you were. I was worried and angry."
Koikobe sighed softly as he streached out on to his stomach and pulled a pullow under his head. "It's okay master. i'm sorry i caused you trouble. but i promise i wasn't trying to run away. i really don't know what happened. one moment i was looking for the mistress and the next i woke up here."
the master looked back at his wife. "you see that? it's your fault. you should have been home." _________________
The woman's nose wrinkled. "I told you I wouldn't be home until morning," she said, "I was meeting with my brother. He has received a message from my sister in the north saying that she is coming down to our city to search for a winter home as it is much too cold up there for her during the snowy seasons. We had to make plans for where she would stay while she looked and I offered up our guest room. Her slaves will have to stay with ours, but she is about as lenient on hers as you are on yours so I suppose no harm can be done by it." She quirked her eyebrow. "You European men... do you all get worried when your wives disappear for a time? Most would simply think they were with another man and go on with life."
His face stiffened and his jaw set. "in my country that's not a good thing. women are expected to be loyal to their husbands and not run off in the middle of the night."
Koikobe sighed softly. He was beginning to tremble slightly as memories of the dream came back to him. "Please don't argue tonight master...mistress. Master saved my life and i am very greatful to him. he understands when i do something wrong and when i don't. and i would have never ever tried to run from him."
Richards face eased a bit as he sat beside the boy and placed his hand on his shoulder. "you're good. i know you didn't try to run away. i just wish i could know what happened." he looked up at his wife again. "As for your sister...as long as she doesn't cause trouble this time..." _________________
The woman shrugged. "It's not as if they're interesting at all," she said, "and I told you when we first married that I would respect your thoughts and wishes and not be with another man." She looked at the slave. "All I ask of you is that you don't act so comfortable around your master as you actually are. If it gets out that we don't beat our slaves, there's a good chance a riot will be caused." She looked at the door. "Please ready yourselves for my sister's arrival." She walked back out of the room, disappearing down the hallway.
The master watched her go with a sigh. "Very well. come now Koikobe. i request your assistance."
Koikobe nodded and stood rather slowly. "Master. do i need to act like i'm afraid of you? is that what she means?"
he nodded. "you know what we're supposed to be. treat it that way. just until she's gone. and i'll have to be mean to you. i don't want to be, but i must."
Koikobe nodded with a slight frown. "i understand master."
