The definition of Pairing

I think the definition of pairing can be too widely used. When shippers ship a couple it might not necessarilly be a steady long-term relationship they believe their shipped couple are capable of having. Some people might ship Muraki with Tsuzuki or Hisoka but feel the pairings can only survive in AU conditions, some might like Tsuzuki with Watari but only see them having a fling or something.

This is just a discussion as to the different lights you see different pairings in and how you define the pairings you like, or the ones you see about. What you think each is capable of, and your definition of what 'pairing' means in fandom. Because not everybody is always thinking the same scenerio when they saw, 'I like' or 'I ship' this pairing.

Pairing? You can pair up anybody and anything. Pairing is a loose term, and far too loose for my liking.

But shipping!! Ahahahah- that is where a few rules come in, I think. Shipping can go from the fact that you like them in a platonic relationship, or a hot and heavy couple. Really- it's just the fact that they're in love, or just lust. Either way, they're SHIPPED.

I like ships- they're more rigid than the loose word 'pair'. You can pair up a shirt with pants, earrings, and shoes. But you can't SHIP them.

Any replies? XD

To me though, 'pairing' implies that there is something consentual about it. Which is why I hardly see anything involving Muraki as a pairing.

My two cents XD

Huh... I want to give my opinion on this but my brain isn't workin, like most of the time. I'm just bad at speaking out... -_- I agree with both JiHye(mainly the second paragraph) and Rhea, though. X3 (Some what) There, I'll just agree with other people! Haha!

JiHye made a very thought provoking response, and Rhea's right about the consensual bit. Should I perhaps change the title to "the definition of shipping" or "the definition of shipping/pairing", I wonder.

Though I agree with all responses thus far.

I actually hate to say this.. But Muraki. Wow.

That man defies most things- human law, gravity, and even the definitions of pairings. Wow.

But really. No offense beforehand, but I think that pairing doesn't always have to be consensual. You can be non-consensual and still think of it as a pair, shipped or no.

Possibly because most people see Muraki as a villan- and we can't imagine him doing anything good. Perhaps that. But I'm still thinking- when it becomes something RESEMBLING a relationship, it becomes a shipping, regardless of consent.

...?

I think this is always to important to kind of get in my mind since even now I can get a little lost. So someone can ship characters but may not see them as *paired* together. I suppose that makes sense, but it can be confusing in debate, someone may be arguing about there being the possibility of non-platonic relationship between characters, be it lust, rape, fling, elements of romance etc etc, whereas someone else may be arguing against them thinking their really talking about love, or a *match*.
