The Mysterious King of Hades/Enma-DaiohSeriously... what DO we know about him? Besides the fact that he's semi-godlike, has a sadistic streak, is very shrewd; calculating; and suspicious, probably really old, and has bird-headed attendands?
Really! What do we know about him!? D<
|

Well, we do know that he has some kind of control over Tsuzuki.
|
Rhea-sama
|
I'm not as sure about that.. I mean, he might have something to do with Tsuzuki's memory block/insanity lock mentioned in book two, but when he's going crazy in the Kyoto arc, Enma can't do anything to stop him.. I get the impression he's letting Tsuzuki go berserk.
("I suppose, we sealed it up more than a century ago.." "Behold what happens when four great spirits are unleashed.")
And good gods, does Enma fancy Tsuzuki too!? ("I can't stand the thought of that beautiful body being disfigured.") Or is that more like an artist's pride in his work. *working under the assumption Enma gives them the new bodies*
...no, no XD Tsuzuki just has yet another creepy person who thinks he has a hawt bod.

He does have control over Tsuzuki in the sense that he won't let him pass on.
|
Rhea-sama
|
Oh well yes, there is that I suppose. Though I'm assuming that goes for all souls who work under him, he just likes tormenting Tsuzuki in particular.
|

He certainly does like torturing Tsuzuki. He did say something about Tsuzuki belonging in Hell so I have to wonder what Tsuzuki supposedly did for him to think that.

He's a demonic sadist, I'll give you that. Sometime, when the YnM series get finished, Tsuzuki's going to be completely torn apart by this man- Muraki is nothing compared to one of the gods. Especially this one!
He likes dressing in the Heian Era's clothing. That much, I know- his hair reminds me of Oriya, for some reason. Oo;
Enma is to me, in a sense, much like Muraki- or should I say, Muraki reminds me of Enma? They both love taking risks, only if they know the outcome; they both enjoy pushing the borders on the Shinigami, and as far as I know, Muraki is trying to play God, whereas Enma IS a god. 'A' god, mind you. XD;;
He did- in book eight, I believe; during the aftermath of Tsuzuki's Kyoto Incident, and he was a bit.. angry at the thought of him trying to leave. Oo;;

Do we know what color Enma's eyes are? I want to say 'gold' but I can't remember if that's official or just from a fanfic I read somewhere...
...though he is depicted with gold eyes in some of the (traditional) artwork I've been looking at...
|

yeah- my grandpa is more Japanese than Korean than he should be, so he'd told me a lot about Japanese deities.
Enma is so mysterious! But I've never even thought of the idea of his eyes; but gold, I've heard. I think of them as indescribable, with the cosmos in his eyes, sth like that. A dramatic, but not quite-fitting description of a character that is so shrouded in mystery. XD

When was this mentioned??
Also has anyone got pictures of Enma at all.
There's very little I can really add. I think the devils trill arc, struck me more than anything. Kyoto not too far behind. Enma saves Tsuzuki, but I'm guessing this was to save the bureau as oppose to an act of kindness. And I was always wondering how it worked, how much of the projection in Tsuzuki's mind was Hijiri and how much was Enma, I guessed at least some of it must be Hijiri since it was Hijiri who appeared and no one else, and because he shouted and there was a strange feel of something happening right before we see into Tsuzuki's mind. And he's words to Tsuzuki were very intriguing.
Also by the Enma allows Tsuzuki to stay and says something about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. Hur? Tsuzuki is an enemy to him in some way.
And what about Kyoto?, when he mentions the Muraki's? What's the connection there.
I mean I have to say I did hear a plausible idea that Konoe probably was the shimigami sent to retrieve Tsuzuki so he may have been involved with him that way-Tsuzuki could have been he's shimigami case, in that sense, when Konoe seems to know a lot about Tsuzuki's past in the devils trill, that could be it, and would explain Enma and the Muraki's perhaps. Enma was probably the one who sent Konoe on the case or was involved with the case in some way, perhaps that could have been their earlier problems with the Muraki's, no doubt the grandson Kazutaka probably read about Shimigami from he's grandfathers notes, or something of the sort, who knows. I'm only speculating. But you get the idea.
JiHyes word have most defintely intrigued me more. But when it comes to Enma. I'm stomped.

That's near the end of book eight, where Konoe mentions that his skin has to grow back or whatever.

*blushes at compliment and moves on*
ew. skin.. regrowth. EW.
that's disgusting to think about. 8D
I wonder how the Bureau get's PAID. does Enma like.. produce gold out of nowhere? wouldn't that cause inflation? :O

Nah they just steal it and then circulate it back into the world of mortals XDD

Hmm, children. I wonder if they could?

Well I believe the official rule is "No hanky-panky" as Konoe says in volume two.. At least when a mortal's involved...

the dead giving birth to a child? Oo; I dunno. doesn't that kinda go against the ideals of a shinigami anyways? I mean.... they're so dark, and babies are the most innocent creatures on earth. XD;

Not to mention if they even could reproduce. They're dead after all.

*shrugs* I'm sure sex isn't a problem- their bodies are the same since they've died, after all. But.. reproduction? XD;;;;

How'd I miss this? Oh well ^^;
I dun know about the reproduction thing. Do you think they could be like the people from "Highlander" and just not be able to have kids? 'There can only be ONE highlander!!' cuts off head. :p nvm
Call me stupid, but when I first started reading this and I was very new to this forum, I thought that Enma-dioh was a girl ^^;;;; I saw the hair and was like "oooh, pretteh lady^^" but then again, I saw Oriya and was thinking, "ooohhh, guy withpretty lady's hair^^" don't even get me started about Kira ^^;;

Its pretty sad to see when a guy has pretty hair than yourself. *head drops down in shame* I want pretty hair!!

LMAO I just had a flash back of my friend, we were walking down the street and there was this guy on the bus, and he just did this thing with he's hair and flashed it like a commercial model and we were like....
I know what you mean, several males I see have prettier hair than I. Its...its very depressing...
On the subject of the whole reproducing thing if it could work between mortal and Shimigami......would that mean the baby would come out human with shimigami powers, or would it come out half dead or something O.o or would it....argh..this is so confusing.....Yoko where are you...

Yes, Yoko, where are you. That is the question we all want to know the answer to. *big sigh*

Ok this question intrigued me a bit and as any crazy nut on the verge of an answer. I have to put my two cents in here.
I for one and probably am the only one. Think that yeah, they can reproduce childern. Why else would it be a rule not to Quote on Quote: have No Panky Panky with mortals.
I believe and as far out as it may sound. That the reason they can not have sex with mortals is because if they were to have sex with one they would reproduce a child which in case would have half DNA of a shinigami. { it would be a big fuck up between the realms of both the living and the dead worlds. Like breaking a genetic code. }
Does anybody ever wonder why Tsuzuki has demon blood in him. Why he was not normal and able to heal unhumanly possible even before he became a shinigami. The question remains a mystery, but break some very intriguing question. { It is possible for unwordly { demons, gods, angels, you name it } to have sex and procreate with mortals.
If you ever have read in greek mythology Gods where know to have sex with mortals and procreate babies. Zeus was a perfect example of this. I believe it is the same in Japanese. That is why it is crucial that the * No Hanky Panky * rule applies to all shinigami's.

Shinto mythology and Greek and Roman mythology are very similar to each other. I had discussions about this with my students and my fellow collegues. It amazed us how much Japanese mythology is like Greek/Roman mythology.

As a child. Mythology and even Folklore has intrigued me. I guess you could say I am the kind of person that even Urban Legends is a conversation piece I would regularly have on daily bases.
Could I ask you a question. Do you per-chance know of any good references on Shinto mythology?

This site briefly talks about different myths and characters of Shinto:
http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/shinto-concepts.shtml
I think one of the books one of my collegues had was called Shinto or the mythology of the Japanese by Romyn Hitchcock. I'm not completely sure, but I'll email her to be sure.
Anyway, here's something you all might not know but the concept of geisha came from the hetaerae, who were courtseans well educated in the arts, philosophy, etc in ancient Greece. I've read about them in my classical mythology book.

Okay that got added to favourites.
Chazmy provided me with a very good answer there. And yes, that does explain the hanky panky rule. I wonder if it has ever happened and what Enma would do if it did, or already has.

I just posted a topic on ' shingami's and babies' on my LJ and I found a good point someone had stated that could also add to the ' NO HANKY PANKY ' rule.
* Not only to not have the shinigami's procreate, but so that a shinigami does not get involved in a human relationship all together . It is very stressful on both parties.
To see your partner get old while the other stays young. To watch you partner die, these can all play a factor in that rule.
But my major belief is to not have childern. It just seems more logical I guess.

That had been my first thought actually, I hadn't considered the procreation bit until is what brought up here. Saying that, I agree with you, how much does the ministry really care the shimigami's emotional angst, (dude emotional angst is the reason why they're all there), the only way I can imagine the ministry caring about the emotional implications is if it interferred with the job. Though altogether childbirth is a very practical thing for Enma and the rest of the world of the dead to take into consideration.

To breed a hybrid would be chaos in the making, it's simple as that.
Emotional distress is just the beginning of what would happen if a shinigami where to procreate with a human. What about the child it self? It would have genes from both parents and where could that possibly lead too.

Damn why don't I edit my posts, they make no sense. I wish JiHye was here, she'd point them out to me, >.< boi would she point them out to me.

An identity crisis?
To be honest, I mean, what DNA does a Shimigami have?? I imagine that if the Shimigami is human, than he's genes are human too. Dead or not. So wouldn't the baby simply turn out human anyway. Most of the Shimigami learn their powers, they're not born with them.
And do Shimigami genes even count, I didn't Tsuzuki or Hisoka mentioned once that the blood that runs through them is cold blood. Would a baby survive such a combination? Or would it simply be still born?
And does the way round count, for instance, if Wakaba was to find some human stud outside meifu, (sorry Terazuma), and got pregnant, would the result be the same if it were Terazuma, (sorry Wakaba, its a het thing, nothing personal) went outside and got a human female pregnant.
And what about Shimigami breeding with eachother? I mean, you can't grow in this world so can you even be born? And Shikigami breeding with Shimigami, does that work?
U_U okay I'm finished now.....
|
Chazmy
|
Well the rule was only specified toward Tsuzuki, maybe Tsuzuki is the one that counts here, not the others. Again Tsuzuki is not fully human. It leads me to believe that perhaps he is the one that can possibly breed hybrids and the one ' they ' most worry about.
