The shadow-self??I was about doing my typical rant raving the other day, nothing special just the everyday rubbish I write and THEN, just like that I began to see a pattern, and this might just be dumb speculation and theory so bare with me, it's just something for people to consider and give feed back if they wish.
But I began to see that for every character I was ranting about I was also able to find something about them that was similar to Muraki. We all know Tsuzuki's probably hiding some kind of dark side there and the whole descendents of darkness thing.
Hisoka is probably the most obvious comparison to Muraki, espcially since his thirst for revenge is the same as Muraki's, he practically defines his reason for exsisting to revenge alone, like Muraki did, and like Muraki is upset Saki died because he wanted to kill him, Hisoka was sad Muraki died in book 3 because as he says he wanted to be the one to kill the man himself.
Tatsumi is just a dark power hungry person who would go FAR for someone he loves, I would say without batting an eyelash he would kill for them, and even cause the person suffering themselves if need be, and we ALL know murder and suffering for a justifiable cause (or what Muraki would probably call one) is NO problem for Muraki, in fact he does it all the time throughout the story.
And with Watari and Muraki, them both being scientists with questionable ethic's and having no problem with expierementing with others well I think I'll end it here for now.
Anyway my overall point is I've began to wonder if as well as being a combination of evil, evil, very naughty, bad, evil traites, could Muraki also be the antogonist that exsists within the characters innerselves.

hm, i think i kinda see what you're getting at. i can definatley see it with hisoka in book 3 when he's worried that becuase he's killed tsubaki that he'll turn into muraki.
as far as i know, we don't really know about tsuzuki's past, so maybe that does has something to do wtih his character and how he acts, afraid he has the potential to turn into something like muraki. maybe thats why he puts so much emphasis on making sure people aren't hurt, the opposite of muraki.
i don't know if that same kind of thing could be applied to tatsumi or watari though. but those are very interesting similarities between the two and muraki that you found.
was i kinda on target on what you were trying to get at?

Yep for a fact, Tatsumi and Watari would be the harder characters to apply to that theory your right. Still whilst posting and debating to others the idea's come on up and you can't ignore them, and though Hisoka and Tsuzuki are probably easiest to compare, I think you can do the same with others too. Simply because the similarities aren't extreme doesn't mean they don't exsist. I'm sure Muraki was an alright if a little messed up lad when he was younger, probably like Hisoka, though still he had the ability to excercise he's darker side to full control over his personailty when given the right reason. I think one of the most important things to remember is motivation and reason. I think anyone of the YnM characters could be considered pretty dangerous if given the right reasons to be.

Oddly, that hisoka-turning-into-muraki thing reminded me of Final Fantasy: Advent Children.
you know- when Kadaj turns into Sephy. Yeah. << >>'
lots of people have shadow selves- Watari included. Hell.. I'm pretty sure that even Wakaba has one... it's just not shown.

In jung theory everyone has a shadow self. And I can see that in all the characters in YnM as well, of course Muraki's shadow self would probably be cheerful and caring to others and wanting to save people a little like.....Tsuzuki.....huh...yeah...ANYWAY, I thought it quite interesting to think that Muraki could represent apart of every characters shadow.
In my head in some way I can see him linked with the YnM characters in some character trait or another.
It's all great to hate his character, but doesn't Hisoka seek revenge also, doesn't Watari experiment on his friends for projects like Muraki did on the ship, he could most certainly be Tsuzuki's shadow if only because their so opposite. Of course the traites exhibited in the YnM cast don't compare to the dangerous level of the villan of the story, but their still there.

it's probably why that shoujo mangas could intrigue somebody so much.. I mean YEAH, they've got pretty gay boys, and YEAH they have major angst and YEAH we have a sexy evil doctor..
but in all, it's just so intricate in such ways that you can't help but get tangled up in it.
..I cannot believe I just said that about Muraki. *hides*
