The Meaning Of Freedom(Jani/Kaze RP)

The next day the mistress's sister appeared at the front of the house with a small entourage, her beautiful black hair up in an intricate bun, several layers of silk underneath her outer kimono.

"Sister!!" she called at the front, "I am here!! Where are your servants to greet me!?" Said sister hurried to the front door, tugging along her husband's servant.

"Go let her in... and don't forget that there's a good chance you'll be beaten if you don't act in accordance." She pushed him gently forward.

He cringed at the thought and hurried out. "Good morning mistress." He was bent nearly in half, bowing so low. "Welcome to Masters house. Please give me your bags and I will take them to your room."

The master stepped out, forcing a smile as he spoke sideways to his wife. "You realize he was never this kind of slave right?"

Koikobe was determined to get everything right though and he did not move from the spot, awaiting the order to take the bags. "If there's is also anything else, please tell me and i shall carry it out."

"That doesn't matter," she answered through her smile, "he's the best looking and best dressed of the servants and she will see that as a reason to praise us. It will show good on us." Her sister looked at the servant for a moment before she sniffed.

"You think I don't have enough servants of my own to carry my things?" she demanded, "or was it that you wanted to assist? Either way, if I weren't kind, you would be useless... the worst kind of slave. Very well, you may carry something for one of my slaves." She waved her hand and one of her slaves strode forward. He himself was carrying three large boxes. One of them was handed off to Koikobe, the larger slave's bright blue eyes looking away from the smaller whom he didn't know. His mistress ignored the transaction and strode forward to meet her sister, bowing stiffly.

"I thank you for allowing my to stay whilst I finish my business here," she said, not sounding thankful at all.

Koikobe wanted to lay into her. he was trying his best. at least he knew his master was kind, truely, and would not beat him, but he wished to scream at her that he was only trying to be polite.

He took the box and followed the other servant. he then frowned as he wondered where these other slaves would go? he didn't want to share a room but he knew it was likely.

The master held his tongue and nodded, forcing a smile. he didn't dare reply for his wife. he also bowed, though not very low. it was something he learned when he'd first moved. most of the villagers did this to him. it was a way of disrespecting someone without outright saying anything.

Mrs. Richards bowed low to her sister, making up for her husband's lack of politeness. "sister," she said, "please come and enjoy your stay with us." she motioned back toward the front door. "please come in and join us for some tea. our slave will lead the others to the room they will be staying in." as she spoke the blue eyed slave looked at koikobe in expectation.

He nodded and turned towards the hallway, motioning silently with a wave of the hand to follow. he sighed to himself. he hated staying in such a small room with so many people. but at least it was his sanctuary. he could speak openly there.

Richards gave him a look as he passed that appologised. he then turned to his wife and sister in law. "please be comfortable while my wife and make us some tea...in the kitchen...now." he pulled on his wife.

the woman moved hautily into the doorway as mrs. richards followed her husband with a high head. "What is it?" she demanded once they were out of sight and earshot, "why ar you being so rude to my sister?"

the few slaves who had come with the woman followed the single slave as he led them, all of them completely silent as they did. barely even the sound of breathing could be heard, as though koikobe was being followd by ghots rather than people.

Richards gave her a cross look. "because i don't like her and she doesn't like me." He went to the cabniate, fully intent on actually making tea, but it was english tea. "We need to send Koikobe on an arrend of some kind until she's gone. he's not this kind of slave and i obviously can't be slicing my wrists open every night."

Koikobe entered the room, feeling a bit unnerved. "This is the room. i'm sorry it's so small. choose your places and i'll get some extra cots and pillows. please, speak freely in this room."

mrs. richards shook her head. "don't judge at first glance," she said, "you don't seem to understand what the streets of japan are like... or what those who own them will do to you if you don't act in accordance with what they believe. give her time, you may just like what you find."

the other slaves looked at eachother for a moment, then shook their heads, still not uttering a sound. a smaller young man, about koikobe's size who opened his mouth like he was about to stick out his tongue, but with a difference. there was no tongue there to be stuck out.

Koikobe's eyes widened. were they all like that? He felt a great sadness wash over him then. he had hoped to have someone to talk to. he sighed deeply and bowed low. "i'm very sorry. allow me to retrieve the cots." he bowed again as he left.

Richards frowned. "Do you expect me to allow her to beat him? he's suffered quite enough in the last ten years. we've only had him a few months. he can't be expected to act like a house slave when he spent the better part of his life in someones bed! he can't act like a house slave because he hasn't been taught."

he was quiet for a moment longer as he thought about this. "if i must leave Japan and return with him to England than i will...to keep him safe."
