His wife frowned. "You won't have to," she said, "my sister is as soft hearted as you are. If you would just give her a chance then you would see that. Had she been the tyrant she made herself out to be to the public eye, then I wouldn't have offered up our home. Had she found out about us taking on servants instead of slaves with that kind of personality, she'd have gossiped to every lord around that we weren't properly Japanese and your English ways were taking over my heritage. Now let's finish the tea and not keep her waiting!"

The large one who'd been told to hand Koikobe the box followed him silently as if to help.

He narrowed his eyes at her a bit. "what is it then that is so odd about her slaves? there's something wrong with them." he went about making the tea. "you'd better pour it then. i'm an old english lord, i'm far too set in my ways to bother trying to learn how to act in upper class japan. i'd give her a chance if she'd stop looking down her nose at me."

Koikobe grabbed several cots and turned, letting out a startled cry. he'd been so heavy in thought that he didn't notice the boy following him. givving a bit of a huff of relife to realize it wasn't a ghost, he pointed to the closet he'd just gotten these from. "we'll need three more, if you please to help." he tried to smile, but his heart was sinking at the idea that they'd never be able to speak to each other. he had hoped new slaves ment new friends, but he didn't see how he could become friends with someone he couldn't converse with.

His wife shook her head at him. "Now that she's out of the public eye I'm sure that you'll see the difference. Even a blind man would see the change in her. But don't be too hard on us who grew up in Japan. I know you dislike some of our ways, but our ways are all we know." She took up the tea and brought it into the next room, bowing to her sister again and apologizing to her sister for having taken so long. Now that the other woman was inside, she did indeed seem softer and told her sister not to worry about it before apologizing herself for imposing on them so suddenly.

The silent slave offered a small smile to the other youth, his glowing blue eyes sparking slightly in the dim light of the room. He lifted the instructed cots with ease and made to follow the other back to the room.

Taking a deep breath, the master followed her and put on a serene face even though he felt a heart attack coming on. "So..." he broke the uncomfortable feeling by speaking. "Has it been a good trip? it's quite a distance."

Koikobe went back to his room and set the cots on the bed. "okay everyone, grab a cot and choose your spaces. i would offer one of you my bed, but i must be up to par for the master and i'm afraid i have terrible nightmares on the floor." he went to the window and sat down, hoping his master would call him for any duity. he wanted to get out of the house. his unsettling nightmares made him restless.

The woman frowned. "Sadly, most of the hardest work fell to my slaves," her eyes were truly sad at this, "they cannot speak, you see, so it is hard for them to warn me about things that I do not know. But they are good workers and I appreciate all of them." She looked at her sister's husband, "and I apologize for the way I treated your slave. I understand that you care about yours as much as I care for mine... and he is very adorable." Her small smile was practically girlish in nature.

The blue eyed slave assisted the others in getting their cots set up where they could and then they settled into a small game on the floor, several waving at Koikobe to join.

He tilted his head slightly. "What happened to them? were they all born mute?" he took a sip of his tea and began to relax a little. "Koikobe is a former brothal slave. i bought him rescently to give him a better life. i'm very protective of him so when you first arrived i was terrified for him. he does not know the ways of a house slave. i'm teaching him slowly and i was afraid you'd want to beat him."

The boy glanced over at them for a moment before standing and slowly making his way to them. "What are you doing?" he seemed very cautious and confused, even a little scared.

The woman shook her head sadly. "If only it had been that painless," she said, "sadly, they were punished for speaking when their former masters did not wish them to, and thus lost their tongues to those master's daggers. I took them in when their masters were going to kill them due to reasons that I dind't think were quite good. And as for your boy, I do believe that I saw the remnants of brothel life on him when I first entered. Your purchace of him was legal, but much more recent than I would expect. However did you meet---" she broke off, cheeks flushing ever-so-slightly before she continued, "but I won't hurt him. I swear to you. I think that I like him."

They looked up at him for a moment and showed that they were setting up some small rectangular wooden blocks in a small tower. All of the blocks were the same size exactily and were planly stained. They demonstrated the idea of the game by pushing out some blocks from the middle and placing them on the top of the tower without it falling over. Then they looked at him expectantly, silently informing him that it was his turn.

the master looked away. "I was travling through Nagasaki on the way home from the states. my ship was delayed in port there. having had quite enough of the water, i took to land in search of good tea. upon finding the market place i wandered for a while. and then i came across a master and a slave. the master was very cruel and whiped the boy when he refused to...satisfy him where they stood. i made the man an offer and he refused. so i followed to see where they lived and i found the brothel..." he took a sip of his tea. "long story short, the man turned out to be a well paying client. i offered double what the man had payed to take him home with me. he raised it to tripple and here he is today."

Koikobe nervously poked a block out but before he could put it on top, the tower collapse, sending blocks spread out between them and he frowned. "i'm sorry..." he began to pick up the blocks and stack them again. "i didn't mean to mess up your game."

The woman made a face. "I could never stand those types," she said, "but I am certainly glad that you found him. He'll do much better here than where he was. I can assure you that my servants will take care of him. They're a surprisingly fun-loving bunch for where their position in life is."

Those around Koikobe chuckled silently and assisted with putting it back together before showing him different tips and tricks on how to play without knocking the tower over.

The master frowned deeper at this but nodded. he wondered how Koikobe would hold up. "perhaps they'll teach him to have a little fun himself then. he's very serious minded and i have to tell him repeatedly that he's been good or he gets very depressed."

Koikobe rather liked this game once he got the hang of it and for the first time in his life, he didn't feel guilty about doing nothing of use.
